You give me Q's and I give you A's.

Hey there folks, it's monsoon season in Philly otherwise know as "Spring."  Mother nature hasn't seen fit to give me a gap in the rain to photograph any one of my new FO's, tricksy snitch. Luckily for me the lovely MaLora of Bird and Bicycle gave me something else to talk about when she nominated me for a Liebster award. Sweet, now I can be a smart ass and post pics of my pretend boyfriends.  Thanks MaLora, hopefully you won't regret doing this. ;)

1. What was the last movie you enjoyed watching?
Gonna reveal that I'm kind of a dude when it comes to movies and say that would have to be "Pacific Rim".  Giant robots punching giant monsters, yes please. Also Idris Elba yelling at people, I could go for a super cut of that.
Do I look like a man who cares? Just get in the damn robot and go punch a monster.
I give that answer with the caveat that I've yet to break open "The Wolverine" which my husband gifted me for Christmas. I expect to enjoy looking at shirtless Hugh Jackman immensely.
Awww Hugh, you bought me some snacks. That's why you're my favorite.
2. What was your most recent adventure?
Adventure? That would mean leaving the house and the sun hurts my vampire eyes. Hissssss.  I have Froggie do all the adventuring and report back.  Besides I don't have time to go out. Dresses need to be sewn for my dates with my imaginary boyfriends. Fassbender said he was gonna drop by this weekend, so I got to finish this hem.
I heard you baked cookies. I love cookies.
3. How do you improve your techniques or sewing knowledge?
Through the internet mostly.  There seems to be a real dearth of books for experienced sewers.  I don't know if it's because beginning sewing is a bigger market, easier to write, or if it's just sexier with it's bright young faces.  If the last point is the problem then I know just the man to solve it.
Yes, yes I am.
4. Why do you blog?
I blog because it makes my sewing addiction seem slightly less crazy and to perpetuate the lie that I'm funny. Oh and to freak out the neighbors with all my selfies. Though I'm not sure they know I'm their neighbor. This makes my constant use of their fence even funnier cause I'm like a neighbor hood pest. Little do they know I'm eating the peanuts they leave out for the squirrels.  Nom, nom. (Not really, but Des tried to once.)

5. Who do you enjoy sewing or making for the most?
Ummm MEEEEE!  Self professed selfish sewer over here. Even my own sister had to to wait a year for me to make her a coat. What can I say, I like clothing A Lot.  My husband once asked, "When are you gonna stop sewing cause you have enough clothing?" I stared at him blankly, stop sewing? Enough Clothing? Error, please retry command.

6. Where do you get your fabric and sewing supplies from?
All my crack, I mean fabric dealers are online.  I think most of you probably could recite them by now. "Yes yes Heather, we know you LOVE Emmaonesock.com. Get a grip already."  And there's GorgeousFabrics.com. MarcyTilton.com, Hartsfaric.com, Sawyerbrook.com, ApplieAnnieFabrics.com, all of Etsy and so forth.  Thank you internet for saving me from the fabric selection at JoAnn's!  "JoAnn's where sewing dreams go to die." - not their new slogan, but it should be.

7. What is a your dream vacation?
My dream vacation goes something like this...all the other people in my house go on a real vacation leaving me alone for a week. I ignore all house work and subsist on a diet of nothing but cake and cookies.  I get to sew, knit and watch period dramas which may or may not star Colin Firth. I sleep on my husband's side of the bed and drool on his pillow.  Basically I fully embrace my anti-social tendencies and become full on hermit. Ahhh bliss, now get off my lawn!!
There can only be one Mr Darcy.
8. Do you meet locally or have a local, in person sewing groups you like?
Sadly I live in a barren waste land when it comes to garment sewers.  I know Becky's over in my neighboring state of Delaware, Hi Becky!  People around here mostly quilt or wonder why anyone would sew their own clothes.  That's OK I wonder why they scrapbook.  I'll just talk to my internet friends until we find the financing for our sewicalist commune/cult. "I hear they worship fabric there."

9. What is your current favorite song or group you are listening to?
Right now I'm on an Arctic Monkeys kick, really enjoying their new album "AM".  Not sure if it's good music or just catchy music, but I've got it on repeat. Listen boys, I'd pour you one for the road if I had any alcohol left, but frog had a wild party last night. Fassbender left some cookies though.
Dude knows he looks like Danny Zuko, right?
10. What is your favorite fabric to wear?
This changes depending on the current temperature of my house. Sadly I can't talk anyone into buying me a giant heat rock to keep me warm in the winter months. How's a lizard lady supposed to self regulate? Huddle in front of the oven? Now you know why I bake so much.  But anyway let's back to the question.  Even in the winter months I do have a cottony underlayer, so let's say my favorite is a cotton/lycra in either knit or woven form. I retain to the right to change my mind when a fancy new piece of silk dances before my eyes.

11. What is your favorite pattern to sew?
I know you did not just ask me to pick a favorite from all my babies! I love them all soooo much. *Hugs pattern envelopes to chest* Honestly I can't pick one cause it's ever changing. My sewing favorites seems to depend on what I'm in the mood to sew. One day it might be simple knit tops, another summer dresses and there's always that recurring desire to sew a complicated jacket. I am "All The Patterns" Heather, hear me roar!   RAARRRR...oops, frog says keep it down and save my hulk impression for Ruffalo.
You're so adorable when your angry.

  1. Just had to tell you that you made my day. Idly flickling through my Bloglovin feed at lunchtime to be confronted by a photo of Idris Elba in some kind of super cut armour. *slumps into a faint*. Followed by another dash of male eye candy in Colin Firth (swoon) ;-) Thanks for vastly improving my Monday. I laughed out loud at your husband's comment and your responses. Always reassuring to know I am not alone in my hermit like sewing tendencies.

  2. i love all your answers! being a hermit is a GREAT quality for one who loves to sew--your dream vacation is exactly the same as mine. thanks for all the eye candy :)

  3. Great answers! :-)

"JoAnn's where sewing dreams go to die." - not their new slogan, but it should be.<--TRUTH (and apparently hysterically funny). And while I don't live in a barren wasteland of garment sewers (I'm surrounded by Holderman's and Amish!) the ones here don't really understand sewing all your own clothes "just because" or "just for fun". To them it's like laundry or washing dishes, something that has to be done. And they really like polyester. Like REALLY like it. I guess they don't like ironing either?

  4. LOL awesome Q & A. You had me at the dream vacation :) perfect!

  5. Oh this made me laugh so much! I hope Alex Turner (is that his name?) reads and realises he DOES look like Danny Zuko. Also love that the post is adorned with lovely men-folk. 😍

  6. "Joannes...where sewing dreams go to die". CLASSIC and totally on point. We need to print tote bags with this.

  7. This gave me a giggle! Also you have wonderful taste in men ;) and Pacific Rim is awesome.

  8. Oh Excellent! There really is nothing like Idris Elba to perk up your day. I'll join you for some hermit sewing/movie watching. :)

  9. Hee hee Lisa, I'm glad I've got fellow hermits to commiserate with. May we all get our dream vacations, it's not like we're asking for much. ;)

  10. LOL! I just threw in that JoAnn's bit at the end, but it's so true. Man, nothing like being surrounded by garment sewers but ones that don't do it for fun. Can't really have a fun conversation about prints.

  11. High Five! Maybe we should plan a vacation for out other family members so we can have the house all to ourselves. Muhaaaa!

  12. No lie, I'm still giggling about the Danny Zuko thing. Maybe he should have left the leather jacket at home. ;)

YAY! Thank you for answering all my questions so brilliantly! I like your taste, hubba hubba! Just look at Mark Ruffalo! So foxy! Speaking of foxy, I haven't checked out Artic Foxes lately. I will have to seek out this new album and put it to the "can I listen to this and sew test." You are really funny and I love reading your posts, hermit or not. Thanks again.

  16. Isn't Ruffalo just soooo cute in that pic. I wanna cuddle up next to him and play with his hair. Thanks for nominated me and coming up with some questions. It's always fun to come up with goofy answers. :)

  18. LOL! I'd better watch myself lest they ban me and I have no where to get emergency spools of the thread and zippers.

  19. You made my Monday! #5 and #6 had me laughing out loud (and #7 just may describe my dream vacation too)! My daughter's favorite was picturing Des stealing the neighbor's peanuts. Maybe we could send you random questions each week since it's so much fun reading your responses and seeing the man candy.

  20. Love your blog -
good sewing stuff & you ARE funny!

  21. Yeah, the whole region's kind of a barren wasteland for garment sewists, isn't it? And my one real life friend who occasionally sewed clothes, even if it was mainly for costumes or swing dancing, had to go and get married and move to Boston, waaaah! Thank God for the internet.

LOVE the Joann's slogan. Even if I did just go shopping there the other day. What can I say, I needed a zipper. And I won't feel as bad if I ruin the fabric I bought trying to work out how jeans in stretch denim will work for me as I would for anything I've been eyeing up on Mood's website lately.

  22. Idris Elba! My boyfriend! SWOOOOOOOOON! I'm a total bro, too- let's watch action movies together, OK? You're the funniest and I'm glad you wrote this.

  23. Hahhaha - I read your "dream vacation" answer to my husband, and thankfully managed not to pee my pants laughing. It was close tho!

    ReplyDelete
  24. You are hilarious!!! Omg, you made me pee my pants! OK... no pants were harmed by pee but you get the idea. Love your answers!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hooray! I like the thought of you laughing with your daughter. Des was like, "Ooooo food on the sidewalk!" - grabs at peanut while I scream "NOOOOO!!!!" I think the random question thing could be fun. I have ever so many pretend boyfriends they haven't all made a blog appearance yet. ;)

  26. Thank you so much. I used to my sister laughing at my jokes but she got the same sense of humor genetically ;)

  27. We need to import some garment sewists or something. Maybe a big downtown fabric store would help pull them in. Then you and I can stop going to JoAnns for zippers and thread. We can dream right? Also I must check out this Lizzie Bennet Diaries for the updated Mr. Darcy.

  28. I would love to watch action movies with you. We can sew hems and eat cookies while we do it. Yippee Ki Yay Motherclucker! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  29. LOL, I picture your husband saying, "Are you trying to tell me something?" Ummm no honey but maybe you should go plan a fishing trip or something. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Maybe I should put a disclaimer that says, "Wear pants at your own risk," at the beginning of the post. Hmmm that might send the wrong idea. :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Or if we can't import garment sewists, we could always start a support group for sewcialists who don't live near stores that aren't Joann's.

And yes, you should check it out, because it's also well-done and hilarious at times. The same company is doing Emma now, and that one started off a bit slow, but it's starting to get pretty good. Also gotta love "Snarky Mr. Knightley."

  32. You. Are. Fabulous. Bloke movies are great, Des eating the peanuts made me choke and oven use is definitely a great way to increase the heat in the house. Can I join your commune?!

  33. Your post brought some smiles that I really needed today. Thanks! I too am a Philly-area hermit (the hermit part due to fibromyalgia and waiting to have both knees replaced later this year). We really are in a barren wasteland re fabric although I know the fabric district near South Street is supposed to be good, and there is Gaffney's in Germantown and of course, Jomar, but Jo-Ann's - your slogan is fabulous. I am in Hatboro and really wish I had someone close by to help me fit a dress for my 50th high school reunion on 4/26. You mentioned polyester? I cannot believe that some of the major catalogs (Coldwater Creek) and designers seem to think polyester is a good thing. I remember a time when you would never have told anyone you were wearing it. I am in my 17th year of hot flashes and never, ever wear polyester. I came to love clothes at the time of Jackie Kennedy, Villager and Ladybug and my favorite dress remains an A-line skimmer. You can wear it with sandals as well as dress it up for evening as Jackie did, and look like a million dollars. I was in a dreadful mood until I read your post and one other about guilty pleasures here:
    http://passagedesperles.blogspot.com/2014/04/guilty-pleasures.html
Thanks for cheering me up. It really was a dreadful day, apart from finding that the back seat of my car, behind the driver's seat, was covered in water from all the rain and there is yet more coming, Great.

  34. Pacific Rim was pretty awesome. What's not to love about giant fighting robots?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Haha... love your posts as always, Heather! You always bring a smile :P

  36. You are always welcome to join the sewing commune. Bring your stash and your machine and we'll get you a sewing cubby. I've got a bunch of bloke movies picked out for tonight. ;)

  37. So glad to hear that I brightened up your day a bit. I haven't been down to the South Philly garment district since college. I remember them having a lot of stuff but being really rude. Of course that was almost 10 years ago, so things could be different now. I loved Jomar during that time period too, but bought mostly crap fabric there. Also felt like I was taking my life into my hands driving down there. ;) Hope today is a lot better for you.

  38. It was a super fun popcorn flick. Kind of wishing I could watch it right now. Yeahhhhh, punch that monster!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Awww thanks Poppykettle. It makes me feel good to make people giggle a bit. :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I will keep that in mind if I head to South Street. That is where my grandmother bought all her fabrics, at Goldberg's, I think. They may be gone, as she also is. Joman is all over the place now, not just in Kensington. The website also lists 5300 Whitaker Ave in the NE as wwell as 2590 Grant in the NE, one in S. Philly and one in Cedarbrook/Wyncote. I thought there was one in Norristown but do not see it listed on their store locator list. Once I get my knee replacements behind me, I am going to NYC. Nancy
